***New Base Officers:

At the 7 January meeting, Past Commander Kevin Kinnally and outgoing Secretary John Sherman conducted the change-of-command and Base officer installation ceremony. Your new Base officers are;
Dennis Staley, Base Commander (POC) (585) 243-3456
dennis_staley@hotmail.com

jfarrell59@msn.com

Neil Bellenger Base Treasurer (585) 359-9985
neil624b@rochester.rr.com

John Sherman and I were presented with very beautiful plaques from the membership to show your appreciation for our years of service to the Base and USSVI. On behalf of both of us, I would like to thank you all for the recognition as well as the cooperation we have received. Our thanks to all those shipmates who have assisted and served on various committees and offices during our tenure. I have every confidence that our incoming officers will effectively carry out the duties assigned by the Base C&B. Also, I urge all able members to get involved in Buffalo Base in some capacity. With the participation of more shipmates we can ease the load of Base management and our USS Croaker restoration committee. Call me (585) 533-9341or any Base officer to volunteer of find out what's needed.
I will continue with some of my former duties as (sort of) Base Yeoman for lack of a better description. Recruiting new members, maintaining Base control reports and records, collecting & logging dues etc. (Auxillarymen are able to handle anything anywhere at anytime even yeoman duties.)

***USS Croaker Restoration Committee News:

The restoration committee is pleased to acknowledge the receipt of a check in the amount of $438.00 from Croaker reunion 2002 coordinator Ken Szablewski.. The check represents unspent funds from the Buffalo reunion. Again we recognize and appreciate the continued support of the former crew of USS Croaker.
Buffalo Base shipmate Ken Nichols has relieved Master Chief Donn Schubert as chair of the USS Croaker Restoration Committee. Ken will announce subcommittee heads and responsibilities in the near future.
Spring is coming and it's time to start planning work on Croaker. Volunteers are needed! Please contact Ken at (585) 786-3821 or cdrkln@yahoo.com if you are able to lend a hand to one of the committees. Sincere thanks and "Attaboys" go to Chief Donn and his assistants for getting the Croaker restoration project underway.

***Convention 2003, Reno:

USSVI convention coordinator Don Brown (Corvina Base) has passed the word to all Base POCs that the reunion hotel, Reno Hilton is 65% booked as of 15 January. If you are considering going to the convention and want to stay at the convention hotel you should fill out the registration page of your AS magazine and send it now. If you haven't been to a USSVI convention yet, this is the one to attend. Reno has it all and really goes all out for the SubVets. Reno 99 was absolutely top notch and Reno 03 will be even better as It will include USSV WWII. The one comment heard from all first time convention goers is " I don't believe how many guys I met that I knew in the navy" For more information contact me.

***Raising of the U-534:

At 2100 hrs, 11 February, PBS will air a new documentary The Raising of U-534, a type 9 Class U-Boat sunk by an RAF Liberator on 5 May, 1945.

***Buffalo Base website:

The Buffalo Base website address is www.USSVIBuffalo.org Base news and Information is posted there. Webmasters John and Bob are making a sincere effort to keep the site updated. However, both have very time consuming work obligations and are not always able to update the pages. Parts of the site are still under construction. Other pages such as Ship's Store and Croaker Ship's Store will be completed as soon as possible.

I hope to see all you Rochester area shipmates at the meeting on the 8th. Storekeeper Fritz always has hot coffee and fresh donuts as well as an inventory of shirts, caps, patches pictures pins and other goodies. Support your Base, Come and join us.

Keep our servicemen & women in your thoughts and prayers. Many are in harms way!
God bless America!

Fraternally,

John Trubee
Buffalo Base Yeoman
